Reading: Collapse by Jared Diamond

Jared Diamond is one of my favorite authors. His Pulitzer Prize book- Guns, Germs and Steel opened my eyes about why the Western countries like England or France, in the past century, have become the most powerful countries in the world.

His new book- Collapse continues that journey by analyzing why one civilization has survived a disaster, while another was extinct. In his brilliant story, he researches on those possible causes of collapse and presents a parallel situation that our modern society is facing.

Are we committing suicide by destroying the environment? Are we destined to be extinct like the past societies? What we have to do to avert this crisis that we are facing?

This book should be read by everyone concerned about the current human situation.

TWO POTS

One of my friends forwarded this story to me. I find it is very beautiful and positive.

Everyone has his/her own flaws and beauties. No one is perfect. What we need is to accept who they are and to look at the good side of other people.

I believe we will always find a beauty within them.

Two Pots

A lady had two large pots, each hung on the ends of a pole which she carried across her neck. One of the pots had a crack in it while the other pot was perfect and always delivered a full portion of water. At the end of the long walk from the stream to the house, the cracked pot arrived only half full.

For a full two years this went on daily, with the woman bringing home only one and a half pots of water. Of course, the perfect pot was proud of its accomplishments. But the poor cracked pot was ashamed of its own imperfection, and miserable that it could only do half of what it had been made to do.

After 2 years of what it perceived to be bitter failure, it spoke to the woman one day by the stream. "I am ashamed of myself, because this crack in my side causes water to leak out all the way back to your house."

The old woman smiled, "Did you notice that there are flowers on your side of the path, but not on the other pot's side? That's because I have always known about your flaw, so I planted flower seeds on your side of the path, and every day while we walk back, you water them."

"For two years I have been able to pick these beautiful flowers to decorate the table. Without you being just the way you are, there would not be this beauty to grace the house." Each of us has our own unique flaw. But it's the cracks and flaws we each have that make our lives together so very interesting and rewarding.

You've just got to take each person for what they are and look for the good in them.

To all of my crackpot friends, have a great day and remember to smell the flowers, on your side of the path.

Trust

I wrote this poem for my babe...I hope we will work things out together.

I know you love me,

You whisper in my ears,

I am doing anything to make you see,

That you have nothing to fear.

I am not a whore,

I am serious about you,

You are someone I am looking for,

And I know you think so too.

You are more precious,

Than those boys out there,

I’m not gonna fuck up,

Our love we will share.

What can I do?

To make you trust me,

What I have to go through?

To make you believe me.

I have given you my key,

I have given up myself,

Trust, please trust me,

That I have nobody else.

I truly trust you,

I deeply believe in you,

I know you love me,

And I hope you do too.

Please give me trust,

I have learnt my mistakes in the past,

Believe me, without trust,

We have nothing left.

Nipple Pierced (Ouch!)

I have never thought that I will have a day I dare to have any parts of my body pierced before. Even though I always fantasize about it, I am always afraid of pain that will occur during a process.

However, today, impulsively or not, I have my nipple pierced. It is a huge step for me because I cannot even have a gut to have a small hole on my ears.

Personally, I think guys with nipple pierced are totally hot!! This fantasy is always in my mind. Many people have tried to convince me to do it but no one succeed.

Until I meet this guy- Gaw. Even though we have known each other for just 3 months, we become like a twin since. It makes me believe that the reason I knew his friend that night in Roxy because I was supposed to meet this guy who always brings out my wild side. He convinced me to change the ticket from Thailand back to New York City a week earlier just to join the Black Party!!

We have been talking about the idea of having nipple pierced for a week. I always say no. However, last night, we hung out at the B Bar in the east village; he started talking about it again. This time, he was serious.

I am pretty wild myself. I will do anything that someone challenges me to do, in particular, something that I always want to do but I don’t have a gut to do it.

Therefore, I decided to have my nipple pierced.

Today, we go to the piercing shop in the East Village. I am so nervous. I am sure a piercer who is an Asian girl notices. I pick a circle ring as my first nipple ring.

She marks my nipple with a pen. Then, she uses a hollow needle to pierce through my nipple and inserts that ring in the hole. It is quick and precise. The process is less than 5 minutes.

I expect it to be more painful, surprisingly; it is not bad at all. Plus, I have no blood from the piercing.

I pay 27 bucks for my pain and a big hole on my nipple.

We go to the Japanese restaurant after. I try to convince my friend to do it. He is hesitated. However, after a glass of draft beer, he decides to fulfill his fantasy as well.

We go back to that piercing store. Finally, my friend has his nipple pierced as well but he picks a dumbbell shape for his first nipple ring.

After I have done it, I feel liberated. There is something I always want to do but I do not have a gut to do it. Nipple pierced is one of them until my friend really brings out that urge.

I feel like I am having fun with my life right now. There are a lot of new experiences happen. I just told my friend that the older I am, the crazier I become.

However, life is too short not to have fun and try new things anyway.

Sex Education and Statistic

Check this link out, very interesting. Durex has surveyed people around the world about sex activities. For example, the British spend the most time on foreplay while the Thai spend the least time doing it!! The Italian have the most frequent orgasms. The Chinese have the most sexual partner while the Vietnamese have the least.

Anyway, you will find a lot of useful and interesting sex statistic around the world.

Joke of the Day!!

What Kills You

As we now know, Dr. Atkins was 258 lbs. at the time of his death, an obese weight for a man 6' tall. For those of you who watch what you eat, here's the final word on nutrition and health. It's a relief to >know the truth after all those conflicting medical studies.

1. The Japanese eat very little fat and suffer fewer heart attacks than the Americans.

2. The Mexicans eat a lot of fat and suffer fewer heart attacks than the Americans.

3. The Japanese drink very little red wine and suffer fewer heart attacks than the Americans.

4. The Italians drink excessive amounts of red wine and suffer fewer heart attacks than the Americans.

5. The Germans drink a lot of beers and eat lots of sausages and fats and suffer fewer heart attacks than the Americans.

CONCLUSION:
Eat and drink what you like. Speaking English is apparently what kills you.

Feedback about My Dream Journal

After I wrote about My Dream last week, I have recieved quite
numbers of feedbacks from my friends, and it was one of the topic
that we talked and asked around last week.

These are some feedbacks I have recieved.

First Feedback,

Tae,
I remember how you wrote me about your dream of
being adopted by a rich family and being able to help
out all sorts of people. I remember having a similar
dream when I was younger (except the adoption part). I
dreamt that one day I would have so much money that I
would be able to donate to schools, fund various
community projects and set out to save the world.

As you say, you've grounded your views a little more,
but you must never forget the essence of your
dream......its to help the lives of others, the rest
was merely a medium to those ends.

In recent months I had an ephiphany, I realized why I
work so hard to improve things with the Navy....and I
can see parallels with you as well; its all about
leaving something better than you found it, and making
the lives of people better one at a time. You good
friend, are a force of change, compassion, and
inspiration. You should never give up, and my drive
only continues on because of people like you give me
hope that there are others out there seeking to make
things better for everyone. I am all about increasing
quality of life for my fellow coworkers and other
sailors, but the same for my friends, family and loved
ones. I do what I do because deep down I believe I can
make a difference. You have intiative too Tae, just
needing a little focus to direct your energies....and
I took feel you can make a difference. I for one am
better off for knowing you, and Im sure everyone you
have encountered is the same. Imagine yourself a
single drop of water that causes a ripple effect in
the pool of life. I believe in you.

Some people go through life trying to find the
meaning.....yet its alwasy apparent; take what you
have cherish it, and may all your actions leave
everyone the better off. If I leave this world knowing
that I made an impact on just one person, then I know
my life was sucessfull. In a world where not enough
people care, all it takes is that one individual to
have the intiative and bring about change.

I leave these words for you to contemplate,

Semper Fortis......

Second Feedback,

aww... i like your dreams. i've been
dreaming of a family more and more myself too. as for my own
dreams... well, i've already slept with over 1000 asian guys so check
that one off the list... hahahah.. just kidding... seriously though,
my dreams were a lot like yours... being rich, blah blah blah... but
now i can say i am so fortunate to have the small family that i have,
to have the small group of friends that i do, and to have a job that
has taken me to so many wonderful places in the world.... between work
and vacations i've now been to more than 15 different countries, and
gone all the way around the world 4 different times. i've seen amazing
places like the eiffel tower, the grand palace in bkk, the great wall
of china and more. i've gone to fashion shows in three major cities,
seen more celebrities than i can count, and even shared a table with a
few of them. in the end though, as exciting as all of it has been, the
things that i want now are much more simple. i love what i do, and
hope that i can continue with some of the excitement, but the things
that i want to add are not grander, more elegant, more fancy, more
excitement or more money......

Third Feedback,

Hey!
Have you ever heard that "Reality Dream", I think there's
nothing wrong on your dream, but you stick it with more reality which
is really really great!. My dream is so far far away from reality...

Fourth Feedback,

Lovely!

I don't think you lost your dreams. They are just a different sort
of dreams, more in phase with the reality of life that you got to understand
better as it came from your experience...

The Truth of War

War is the greatest evil that human being has ever created. War takes tears, blood and lives of thousands of innocent people. It tears apart family. Children become orphans; mothers lose their sons; wives lose their husbands.

Iraq war is the greatest sin that is committed by the self-proclaimed moral President who always prays to the Heaven Father. Ironically, the most pro-life president in history does not seem to care about lives that have been perished in this unjust war.

Everyone, but the president, has to sacrifice everything he/she has in the name of freedom and patriotism. This president has never even offered an apology to those families that lost their sons and daughters by his misleading statement about the Iraq war.

I find this editorial in New York Time by Bob Herbert is very direct and condensed. This piece of article exposes the truth of war that I can summarize as follow.

  1. No one really cares about the civilian casualties, in particular, if it happens with the enemy’s side. If the tragedy happens to our civilian, we will have an investigation. However, if it happens to our enemy’s side, we call it a mistake that we cannot avoid in the war.

  2. Media is a joke!! Think about all 24/7 media coverage of Michael Jackson, Martha Stewart, Pope’s death and Terri Shaivo. Those big news channels are falling into a trap of creating rating. No one wants to talk about a real and big issue like Iraq war, Tom Delay’s corruption, Environmental Issue, etc anymore.

  3. This is the most powerful words from Herbert, “There's been hardly any media interest in the unrelieved agony of tens of thousands of innocent civilians in Iraq. It's an ugly subject, and the idea has taken hold that Americans need to be protected from stories or images of the war that might be disturbing. As a nation we can wage war, but we don't want the public to be too upset by it.”

Finally

Finally, I have to let it go,

It’s no point to hope,

It’s no hope to try,

It’s time to say goodbye.

Finally, I have seen the truth,

It’s time I have to choose,

I am giving up the light,

I am giving up the fight.

Finally, my prayer is answered,

My self-deception is broken,

My eyes are opened,

I am kissing hope goodbye.

Finally, I realize what I’ve learnt doesn’t matter,

What happened that matters,

I wish I could do it again,

But it’s too late; my hope is in-vain.

Finally, I will grow,

I will never repeat my mistakes again,

I hope I can try with you,

But I know you don’t want me to.

Finally, you show,

I know, I know, I know,

You have given up a fight,

Long before the end of the night.

Finally, I have let it go,

You have moved on,

I have to move on,

I am moving on.
